On Wednesday, April 26 a beautiful Green Mountain Sugar Maple tree was delivered and planted at the Nairn Cemetery to commemorate the 90th reunion of the Stewarts of Glen Lyon Clan. Special thanks to Laurie Pallett for arranging for it to be delivered all the way from Sheridan Nurseries, Georgetown. Under the watchful eye of Liz McHugh, the tree was planted by John Ross (Nairn Cemetery Board) and Andy Hemming. Andy’s wife Janet is one of our very own Stewart clan, through the Kennedy connection. Andy, Janet, and many of the Kennedy extended family will be at the reunion. Special thanks to this year’s Chief, Gay Spooner, for her wonderful leadership.
The tree sits on the very edge of the old cemetery and is between two other maples. The tree is close to several Stewart headstones. The closest headstone belongs to John G. Stewart and his wife, Christina Rose.
Plans are underway to choose an appropriate commemorative marker for this tree. Contributions to this project would be sincerely appreciated. A donation of any size would be gratefully received by Jane MacKenzie, Treasurer; P.O Box 5, RR#1 Dashwood, Ontario N0M 1N0. Please make cheques payable to Jane MacKenzie.
